India had a proud moment a few months ago; the world’s smallest car, manufactured by Tata Motors, an Indian car manufacturer. It will be a prouder moment for India, if the most fuel-efficient car also originates from India.
In this world of rapidly depleting energy resources, I think it becomes our priority to save these to provide a better life for our future generations. I wish everyone would watch ‘An Inconvenient Truth’, to realize the gravity of the situation. It has been criticized for presenting a darker picture than there is, but still I am of the view that it is an indicator of where we are heading.
On an individual level, we can start off with small things, for e.g. print only if necessary, recycle paper, cans, bottles etc, make sure lights are switched off if you don’t need them, use paper/cloth bags instead of polythene ones. These small things will help in the long run.
On a more broad perspective, we could look at harnessing and using those resources provided to us by nature. For e.g. in India, a land blessed with bright sunlight for majority of the year; we could use solar power for low energy electrical equipments.
Another example is utilizing rain water to a better degree, especially in a country like the United Kingdom, where it rains literally every other day. The simplest and most cost-effective way to using rain water would be for purposes like flushing, watering plants etc, would it not? I have been ridiculed by many for the use for flush idea; but that I think is the ones of best uses of rain water. It is not wasted by simply going down the drain, and there is no water treatment necessary for these uses except for the basic filtering (if needed).
These are just a few thoughts of mine. I am sure there are many others floating all over the world, which we can put to use.
The message is simple: Save the environment, save our future.
